Due to my inexperience with aptosid I am one of those who crashed X recently, after a d-u.
Had problems with video ever since, like this one:
http://aptosid.com/index.php?name=PNphp ... highlight=
I cannot set a screensaver either.
I suspect nvidia has to do with it, I installed nouveau to no avail.
So, I see lots of nvidia packages, how do I install/re-install it?
nvidia-glx?
Also not sure about nvidia-kernel-source and nvidia-kernel-dkms.
Am I not supposed to use dmakms for this?
Looking forward to some guidance.
Thanks in advance. |

First of all, what are you using at the moment ?
ATI/AMD, Nvidia, Nouveau ?
Code:
infobash -v3
paste it here
If you want to install nouveau
Remove
Code:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf
Remove
Code:
all traces of nvidia in /etc/default/dmakms
For /etc/default/dmakms
you can comment out nvidia-kernel-source like so or remove it period
Code:
# Add one or more names of module-assistant compatible kernel module source
# packages to this file, and they will be processed by module-assistant
# automatically when upgrading or booting a Linux kernel lacking a module
# package derived from them.
#nvidia-kernel-source
Remove
Anything related to nvidia-kernel in /usr/src/
Example:
Code:
nvidia-kernel.tar.bz2
nvidia-kernel-3.0-3.slh.2-aptosid-amd64_280.13-1+3.0-18_amd64.deb
nvidia-285.03
linux-headers-3.0-4.slh.3-aptosid-amd64
Code:
apt-get clean
init 3
apt-get purge ^nvidia* ^libnvidia*
apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-nv (only if still installed)
apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-core xserver-xorg-video-nouveau libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental
Any error messages please post
This is all in the manual by the way |

Info on what I am using at the moment is in the link I posted.
ckosloff@pavilionKDE:~$ infobash -v3
Host/Kernel/OS "pavilionKDE" running Linux 3.0-4.slh.3-aptosid-amd64 x86_64 [ aptosid 2011-02 Ἡμέρα - kde-full - (201107131633) ]
CPU Info AMD Turion 64 Mobile ML-37 1024 KB cache flags( sse3 nx lm ) clocked at [ 1600.000 MHz ]
Videocard ATI Radeon XPRESS 200M 5955 (PCIE) X.Org 1.11.0 [ 1280x960@60.0hz, 1440x900@59.9hz ]
Network cards Realtek RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+
PCI device 0x4243:0x4318
Processes 135 | Uptime 9min | Memory 571.2/1996.0MB | HDD WDC WD3200BEVE-0,WDC WD3200BEVE-0,Desktop Size 2640GB (10%used) | GLX Renderer Gallium 0.4 on ATI RS480 | GLX Version Yes | Client Shell | Infobash v3.37
ckosloff@pavilionKDE:~$
I have video-ati and nouveau installed, but still have errors, that is why I was thinking of installing nvidia.
Please read posted link and post instructions accordingly.
Regarding mesa, all this is installed:
libgl1-mesa-glx
libglapi-mesa
libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental
libgl1-mesa-dri
mesa-utils
libglu1-mesa
Regarding nouveau:
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
libdrm-nouveaula
Regarding ati, radeon:
xserver-xorg-video-ati
xserver-xorg-video-radeon
xserver-xorg-video-radeon-dbg
radeontool
xserver-xorg-video-mach64
xserver-xorg-video-r128
firmware-linux-nonfree
libdrm-radeon1
libdrm-radeon1-dbg
I am also thinking of installing the fglrx driver, non-free ATI/AMD RadeonHD display driver, that may be the best option for this card, but again this one has fglrx-modules-dkms, and I don't know if I should use dmakms instead. |

@CK you need to decide what you want to install. I suggest following pipers instructions and remove all nvidia associated files. Unless you really need ATI software, remove all the ATI and Radeon files as well and give fglrx try... chances are it will do a good enough job. One of the biggest benefits is that it is automatically updated and in sync with Debian/sid. Lately there have been so many problems with video that sacrificing a little performance for a hastle free dist-upgrade is worth it.
Edit: thanks for the correction, didn't know fglrx was out of sync with new Xorg as well. So it looks like the only good option is Radeon. |

Why should he install nouveau?
He has a ATI Graphics Card!
So he only can use "radeon", since fglrx in sid does not support xserver 1.11. |

I tend to agree with towo and slam.
No point in installing nouveau, nvidia was never installed, so I will purge nouveau.
However, I see that all fglrx packages state latest version 1:11-8-2, and, since radeon alone does not work properly, it might be worth giving that a shot.
Any comments? |

Exactly
His post title
Code:

really confused the shit out of me and seeing why he/she has so many problems.
Why I posted

The reason for my post is that radeon alone (already installed) does not work satisfactorily, so I am looking for a solution.
I have read post about fglrx being out of sync, but since latest versions seem to match 1.11 I am willing to test it, previous backup of my system.
Now, kindly answer just this one question:
should I use dmakms with fglrx-source OR
fglrx-modules-dkms? |

I actually think you have no clue to what your doing period, not that there's nothing wrong with that, we were all there once, but to tell someone that is trying to help you .....
hmm, you weren't breast fed were you ?
May you please read this

Even others are starting to notice

Sorry ckosloff, but your posts are funny. This is the second time you complain that a certain driver is not working. And in both cases it is about a driver for hardware you do not have.
Here you complain about the nvidia driver only to admit later on that you have an AMD graphics card installed.
Here you complain that the Bluedevil bluetooth driver is not working. Only to admit later on that you do not have a bluetooth adapter on your system.
So I would strongly suggest that you check first if a hardware is installed at all in your system before you complain. Thus not wasting other people's time.
Best Regards,
Sordon
Yes, I agree, my posts are useless and I waste my time |
